Lessons from Jesus The gospel books of the Bible provide intriguing insights into the life of Jesus Christ, who is the central figure in the Christian faith. Some of the accounts elaborate his ministry and the demonstration of high power in addressing the needs of the people. Despite his good deeds, the Jews organized a plot of getting him crucified. This paper will consider these events and analyze how they are applicable in different contexts. Summary Miracles in Mark 5 and John 11 In the fifth chapter of the gospel book of Mark, the author relates powerful signs that Jesus performed. The first twenty verses of Chapter five of Mark describe how Jesus freed a man from the demons that had possessed him. Background information presented indicates that the demons tormented the man immensely compelling him to dwell near tombs. However, on seeing Jesus, the man recognized that Jesus could offer a remedy to his problem, by ordering the demons to depart from him. Moreover, the man had knowledge on the true identity of Jesus as the one sent from God because he hid obeisance to him. Jesus ought to know the man’s name, and he replied that he was Legion because multiple demons had possessed him. Upon his request, Jesus ordered the demons to move out of him and possess the swines that were feeding on the mountains instead. After the demons possessed the swines, they moved into the sea and drowned. On Jesus’ order, the man went to retell his experience to his people (Reddish, 2011). From verses 21 by Mark, Chapter 5, a man named Jairus approached Jesus requesting him to accompany him to his homestead and heal his daughter. According to the man, the daughter was critically ill. Heeding his call, Jesus accepted to go with him, although the large crowd following Jesus proved to hinder swift movement. In this crowd was a woman who had suffered hemorrhaging for twelve years without finding any remedy despite her search. She had the conviction that Jesus had the potential of healing her condition. She only touched her garments and experienced instant healing. As they walked, they received news that Jairus’ daughter had succumbed to her illness. However, Jesus proceeded to the homestead and brought her back to life. In addition, John in Chapter 11 outlines how Jesus resurrected his friend, Lazarus. This happened after he had been in the tomb for four days. During this occasion, Jesus saw the grief of the people and wept showing his sensitivity to their needs (Reddish, 2011). Application It is evident that Jesus had power and used it in a sensitive manner of helping others. He utilized every opportunity that he had in helping others. The central focus of nursing is bringing a difference in the life of people through care giving. Following Jesus’ example, I can devote myself to addressing the needs of the sick. From my personal experiences, I have been quite insensitive about the needs of people, and I realize the need for developing sensitivity to people’s needs. The society can benefit greatly from adopting this quality of extending help to the needy. Death and Resurrection – Luke 22-24 Chapters 22 to 24 of the book of Luke present a chronological account of the events leading to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Chapter 22 presents a description of the final evening meal that Jesus shared with his disciples. During this occasion, he kept reminding them of the critical times ahead of him. After the meal, he proceeded with them to the Mount of Olives where he urged them to persist in prayer so that they would gain the ability to resist temptation. Jesus embarked on intense prayer, although his disciples dozed off. After his prayer, Judas approached him with the men who sought to arrest Jesus (Reddish, 2011). After his arrest, they took him to Pilate and made false accusations against him. Pilate forwarded the case to Herod, who did not find anything against him but sent him back to Pilate. Pilate granted the people their will of having him cucified. After Jesus’ death, Joseph of Arimathea requested to bury his body. On the third day, Mary Magdalene and her counterparts found her body missing from the tomb. Peter confirmed this, and Jesus’ numerous appearances to them assured the disciples that he had been resurrected. Towards the end of chapter 24, Jesus rose to heaven. Application The suffering of Jesus during his death helped me reflect on the suffering that sick people undergo in hospital beds before they succumb to their diseases. However, Jesus kept his faith. I can use his example in encouraging the sick to have hope beyond disease. In my personal life, I realize there is a need for an individual to prepare adequately to tackle any challenges that may emerge. There is a need for proactive thinking just as Jesus prayed intensely before his painful ordeal. The topic is critical for society, especially Christians, because in his resurrection they have hope for the future. Jesus’ Return Matthew’s chapter 24 outlines the signs that would help his followers discern that his return was coming. Jesus outlined these signs because there was a need for his disciples to stay in anticipation of the great day. He mentioned wars, hunger, famine, earthquakes, and the emergence of diseases. These would appear in a complex simultaneity. However, Jesus highlighted that only God was aware of the exact day of his return (Reddish, 2011). Application As I train for an advanced career in nursing, I am aware of the multiple diseases that are threatening to wipe out a great population of mankind. I realize some truth in prophecy described in Matthew’s Chapter 24. As an individual, I am confused about the mystery surrounding Jesus’ return because I am not a practicing Christian. The society, especially adherents of the Christian faith, can benefit greatly from understanding the signs that will signify Jesus’ return that they are anticipating. In conclusion, it is intriguing to learn about Jesus. His personality is awe-inspiring even for non-Christians. Adopting his attributes can help an individual become a better person in life. His teachings are applicable in many aspects of life. Christians seek to emulate the example that was his whole life. His death and resurrection serve as a foundation of their hope for the future. It is the reason why they are anticipating his return. References Reddish, M. G. (2011). An Introduction to the Gospels. Nashville, TN: Abingdon Press. Read More
