Democratic Republican National Convention In organizing and planning for a national event, it is important to always ensureits success. Success of an event is coupled with a number of risk assessments. Events usually have risks that accompany it. Furthermore, the risk sometimes poses threat to the events and carries various levels of consequences. In the essay below, we shall be examining the threats and risks involved in planning for an event in Miami Florida. A convention for the Republicans and Democrats is going to be planned and the risk assessed. In addition, potential threats will be assessed based on the consequences they might cause. Lastly, recommendations on how to avoid the threats and risks will be made so as to ensure the event is carried out successful. Key Words: Risk assessment, threats, consequences, recommendation Threats In organizing the Democratic Republican National Convention, review of threats from the top to the bottom is key in evaluating how resources are supposed to be distributed and the level of workforce to be distributed to combat each threat. By DRNC being positioned to take place in Miami, Florida, quite a lot in regard to preparation of the event had to be taken into account. By having Major Waren plus other divisions in charge of planning the event, he has to ensure that all is in place before the major event(Harrison, 2010). Based on his assessment of the area, Major Waren would have come up with the following threats that can affect the Democratic Republican National Convention from that which can pose the highest risk to the least. Top in the threats likely to occur in the event is the issue of a hurricane disrupting the event. Since the event is scheduled to take place in August, which is mostly known to harbor very bad hurricanes, careful assessment of the risk involved has to made in order to assess whether it will be worthwhile carrying out the event or not. Hurricanes are natural disasters that pose great risk when they occur. In such a situation, the risk of a hurricane occurring on that day can be only be found from the metrologist department some weeks before the event. Hurricanes pose threat to infrastructure and human lives and can result to huge damage(Harrison, 2010). Based on the positioning of the event, hurricanes can result in extensive damage as it can cause disruption of the airplane system, cause certain planes to crash, result in heavy traffic, cause uprooting of houses and even the venue infrastructure. Another threat likely to occur in the event that has high consequence is the event of a terrorist attack(Harrison, 2010). In having a convention that harbors bought the leading political figures from both the Republican and Democratic side at one point in USA, always alerts terrorists groups to act in such scenarios. Local or international terrorists can try to disrupt the event through grenade attack, ramming into the crowd by cars, or by use of suicide bombers or self-implantable explosive devices. Such a risk would pose devastating consequence to the people who would have attended the event(Harrison, 2010). In addition, the terrorist can deploy the use of sniper men to kill some of the members in attendance. In the world full of terrorist groups and activities, it means that the person in charge has to lies with the local antiterrorist group (JTTF) in collecting intelligence about terrorist activities likely to take place in such place. Another risk likely to occur in such an event is the issue of large crowd management. In as much as the consequence for such a threat is low, it can still be evaluated and necessary measures taken to combat it(Harrison, 2010). In events that pertain a collection of members of both Republicans and Democrats at one place, entails management of followers of both partisans. Large crowds normally appear to attend such events and hence pose a threat to the security in place in the given secluded area. A large crowd can result to stampede and the death of certain individuals; hence care has to be taken in regard to a large crowd turning up for the event(Harrison, 2010). Another risk likely to occur in the event is the issue of protestors. Protestors against the Republicans and protestors against the Democrats can turn up in the event and cause huge chaos. Protestors normally call for the help for security officers to be deployed to the site. Placing them on the worst case scenario, that is violent protestors who come armed with deadly weapons ready to cause mayhem and disrupt the event. Assessing Vulnerability Based on the location of the event at the American Airlines Arena, the event planner can be able to assess some of areas which they are vulnerable. First of all, in planning the event near an airport make the event vulnerable to threats that exist in airports. Some of these threats include airplane crash and terrorist activities (Deng, 2008). Disclosing the location of the event to the public before the convention is another thing that can make them vulnerable to attacks from violent protestors and terrorist groups. Terrorists for instance can implant bombs in advance before the event and detonate it right when the convention is taking place(Harrison, 2010). By carrying out the event in an open place, denotes that the event will be vulnerable to natural disasters like thunderstorms, hurricanes, whirlwinds, rainfalls, earthquakes and so many others. Consequences assessment report In the event of a threat occurring in the convention, the organizers should have known the consequence likely to occur from each threat. In the chance of the event being hit by a natural disaster like a hurricane, the consequence involved will be high. Hurricanes can result in wide spread damage (Harrison, 2010). The damages caused by the event can range from destruction of billboards, power lines, event’s infrastructure, halting traffic among others. In addition, if it occurs while the event is continuing, many lives can be lost because of the mayhem and confusion surrounding its occurrence (Croft, 2004). In the event of a terrorist threat in the convention, it is important to have assessed the likely consequence (Harrison, 2010). Terrorist always bay for blood of the innocent citizens in an attempt to prove a point that they exist and cause terror among people and government. Terrorist can implant bombs in the event and cause mass causuality. Death of individuals is not a risk for one to joke about as it has devastating consequences to the families and the government in the general. Proper planning has to be accorded in combating such consequence (Harrison, 2010). Recommendations In planning for an event like the Democratic Republican National Convention, one has to be careful in ensuring that the threats have been combated (Croft, 2004). First of all, in looking at the threat of Hurricanes, it will be wise for the organizers of the event to lias with the metrologist department in Miami, Florida in order to get the latest weather pattern. In addition, by working together, such an occurrence can be avoided hence preventing the consequences likely to be met in the event of it occurring. Natural disasters that can be avoided like rainfalls, whirlwinds, and typhoons can be avoided by cancelling the event or rescheduling it on a day which does not have such occurrences (Harrison, 2010). Another recommendation can include deploying a number of security officials to the event to prevent protestors from accessing the main arena. In addition, the event planners can liase with the national and state agencies responsible for national security so as to collect intelligence about the likely hood of a terrorist attack on the arena (Harrison, 2010). In addition, sniffer dogs can be deployed in search of detonative devices prior to the event. In addition, security officials can be trained on the ways to screen individuals attending the event so as not to miss out on suicide bombers and people carrying grenades (Damien, 2010). Furthermore, scrutiny of the perimeter around the arena can be beneficial in eliminating sites which snipers can hide to carry out their heinous acts. References Croft, D. (2004).
