There are arguments that social networking platforms have failed to maintain privacy and ethics related issues hence there is need for intervention. It is quite unfortunate that the same platforms that were before viewed as safe grounds for expressing views and sharing honest opinions have unending concerns about their levels of privacy and ethics maintenance. Some of the key issues raised include cyber stalking, cyberbullying, and social profiling among others.
Cyber stalking has become a common issue in the recent years especially with the continued use of social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter among others. This can be attributed to the fact that joining such social media platforms requires provision of personal information including physical addresses. However, the platforms have offered options for hiding personal information but this is not to the knowledge of many users. Most users leave their personal information unsecured hence visible to the general public. In every society there hardly lacks people with ulterior motives hence availability of personal information may be accompanied by threats. People are able to locate a user using the personal information given and this may prove to be threatening.
Additionally, increased advancements in technology have also contributed to a large extent in promoting cyber stalking. For example, there are applications such as ‘creepy’ that allow people to get locations of users by tracking locations of recent posts. Moreover, some of smartphones automatically give latitudes and longitudes when uploads such as pictures are posted online. This allows people to know the location of such users hence contributing to cyber stalking. Nevertheless, users should ensure that they are fully conversant with the privacy tools available on different social network platforms in order to reduce cases of cyber stalking.
