African Americans in the 21st Century by Boyd Herbert

Herbert’s essay is the first one in the book and he argues that the issues African Americans are facing in the twenty first century are the same as the ones they faced in the past. The author denotes that African Americans have to change their tactics of opposition, self-determination, and expression in the twenty first century so that they may be efficient (Boyd 2). This is because Herbert believes that the twenty first century is different from other times when there was slavery and a lot of oppression. The other significant essay in the book is the one by Ron Daniels who discusses how racism began in the United States. (Boyd 46). Daniels uses clear language and he breaks down all his point to enable all readers to understand his contribution. In his discussion, Ron Daniels account for how racism has affected African Americans from the time it began in terms of their economic wellbeing. Daniels argues that African Americans have always had the lowest economic well-being in the United States from when racism started in the country (Boyd 23). Another critical contribution in the book is that of Angela Davis who gives an account of the continued increase in the number of black prisoners (both men and women) in the US. This author argues that prisons make supernormal profits from detaining individuals because they do not face industrial actions and strikes (Boyd 46). Davis ends the essay by stating that there is need to change the pattern and behavior of the US prisons. (Boyd 46).  ...Show more

The paper tells that the importance of African slave trade was, in the author’s opinion, increased due to the necessity to exploit natural reaches of the New World in the absence of opportunities for the use of either Native or free European workforce in large numbers.
