Subsequently, following the demand of Majorie Letshaw, who wanted only white nurses, Brenda Chaney was prohibited from attending her. A justification if the ban was found in the Indiana state laws which provide the right to the autonomy, and privacy for the residents as well as in the federal laws that allow residents prefer healthcare providers of the same sex.
Chaney complied with the policy and avoided any contacts with Letshaw. After that, other patients also expressed their will to be given only white nurses. Moreover, the following situation served as an encouragement for Chaney’s colleagues to make inappropriate jokes and offensive statements about her. Finally, Chaney got fired after one her colleagues said that the woman used offensive word, although she was never admitted of profanity
