This makes the book sociologically relevant. Ahrens and Gilmore’s book, The Real Cost of Prison Comix (2008) informs the readers about the way the world works in many ways. The authors have documented an intense breakdown on how the United States’ social and economic social addiction to imprisoning Brown, Black, and poor people for certain offenses has twisted into a mass incarceration epidemic. “It’s like the United States is socially and economically addicted to imprisoning Brown, Black, and poor people for certain offenses”. This book indicates how the world works through its vivid white and black images, case studies of men and women in context, and well researched background information. These give vast vital access and knowledge to progressive networks that transform the world’s crisis. Lois Ahrens being the director and founder of the Real Cost of Prisons Project that provides educational materials popular to the justice policy researchers, readers and the public in general experience the impact of mass incarceration as detailed in the book. This book also compares with readers life and career goals in that it has a wide access and importance cutting across all the audiences. The comics are actual direct Real Cost of Prisons Project’s products of the educational workshops concerning popular economics, public health, and progressive abolition and reforms. This makes the book comparable to the readers’ life and career goals. The book also indicates how potential readers cover elementary

schools via community based organizations, colleges, legislators and voters, mental and medical care providers, and people who are surviving inside prisons. This covers majority of career goals of almost every individual. In spite of my critiques about the book such as the way the authors compel the readers to have their knowledge transformed into action, the book books helps readers understand the way in which mass incarceration system pervades human lives that pays the cost of that same system. The books also teaches readers how the mass incarceration system is vulnerable to people who exert their effort and thought into organizing to shrink it. The Real Cost of Prisons Comix urges its readers to realize that they are not living alone in the imagination or struggle for a better living. This book is highly recommended in numerous courses bridging issues of media, social justice, American Studies, educational inequities, critical thinking, and other themes of race, gender and class. The book may be criticized from the way it explains political collusion and economic greed that is inherent in prison location. The book has failed to document the environmental injustices, the destruction of local economies, the legal maneuvers, racism, and anti immigrant business, that stem from the U.S prisons that are named “community development projects”. There are a lot of new things that I have learned from this book: the perception of race, criminality, and class, the mass incarceration system, drug policies, and case studies that show the U.S environmental aspects of prison location. There are also cases that indicate life of individual persons in the momentary decision context that is significant for readers in mastering the consistent organizational racism and barrier for individuals of color, particularly mothers and women. The book has also exposed the violent and subjective enforcement of drug policies and law
