This paper has explored various studies on gender equality and equal opportunities over the last few decades and across cultures. It has been found out that sexual discrimination against women is prevalent in different sectors in society, especially in the workplace resulting in pay and employment gap between men and women, sexual harassment and difficulties in career promotion experienced by women. With greater awareness of the public, and the better support from the government and private sectors in providing equal opportunities for both genders, there is hope for a better future of women in the workforce.

“Equal opportunity” is a means by which a person receives equal access in society. An “equal opportunities approach” is premised on the principle that all people can avail of certain rights or privileges such as education, employment, health care or other welfare services without any discrimination or any preference whatsoever. Bracknell Forest Borough Council in the UK, in their statement of policies and practices assert that they aim to create working environments “where all employees and potential employees have fair and equal access to available opportunities and enjoy fair and unbiased treatment”
