Racism: Biased And Prejudiced Society - Essay Example

Nobody downloaded yet
The very thought of leaving behind one’s family and trying to make a life in a strange land and getting humiliated in the bargain pulls at the heartstrings of its readers giving them an opportunity to reflect on the injustice of it all. Poor Willie engages himself in the oddest of jobs such as mowing lawns, the King leaves, cleaning gutters, washing windows, working and restaurants and clearing the ice in front of houses during the wintertime just to save money and bring his family to live with him. Being a black, and a Haitian refugee, he automatically becomes a victim of racism. He was also reported to have been burnt and beaten because of this. Poor Willie is now facing a trial in a court of law. In Nikki Giovanni’s “Campus Racism 101” she poignantly and effectively brings out the feelings and emotions of Black people in a white world. She quotes her own example of being a professor of English, at Virginia Tech, even though she was a black, working on a white campus. According to Giovanni, ignorance is indeed very painful but rarely the pain is recognized on given any prominence at all. ‘Campus Racism 101’ is more of an eye-opener to the black community in general and at the same time serves to be a sort of reflection for the white community. She brings out the difficulty of blacks in trying to get an education in a college for whites. She says that Blacks find it difficult to get suitable jobs just because they’re not college educated. Giovanni stresses the fact, that it is impossible to find a place that exempts Black individuals from coming into contact with the demeaning mentality of white Americans. She explains that discomforts are predominant not only in white colleges but also in the racist world that we live in. She goes on to give a few vital points which would go a long way in helping the Blacks to cope with the situation. She advises them to attend regular college no matter what happens.  ...Show more
