Submitted Submitted by 6th June’ INTRODUCTION Alcohol and drug Abuse is undoubtedly one of the major problems that the human race is facing in the current times. It is ironic that a menace to humanity as intense as Drug and alcohol addiction has become so very common in society. This paper attempts to highlight the nature of this problem, its causes and the possible solutions. The terminologies alcohol abuse and drug abuse can literally be defined as follows: Alcohol abuse: Use of alcoholic beverages to excess, either on individual occasions ("binge drinking") or as a regular practice. For some individuals-children or pregnant women, for example-almost any amount of alcohol use may be legally considered "alcohol abuse," depending on local laws. Heavy alcohol abuse can cause physical damage and death. (Medicine.net). Drug abuse: Habitual use of drugs to alter ones mood, emotion, or state of consciousness. In the light of the above mentioned definitions, the frequent and untimely use of alcohol and drugs is termed as abusive, meaning to say that these are termed as malpractices or corrupt practices. These habits have innumerable cons associated with them. They range from the unhealthy effects to the addict himself and then go on beyond how the society gets affected. CONSEQUENCES OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE The adverse effects of alcohol and drug abuse on society are many. It is almost impossible to discuss those effects in a comprehensive manner. However some of them are categorized and discussed in the text below: Effects on Family: Exposure to drug and alcohol abuse prevents a person to be beneficial to the society. The central effects of this ailment are observed in personal life. Such a person can not be a good life partner, parent or a mentor. The depression, anxiety and hopelessness in an affected person result in a disturbed family life. The children who generally see their parents as initial role model are brought up with distorted and disturbed personalities. The in turn affect the society with their improper and inappropriate actions. The left over wandering family of such a person becomes an additional burden to the society instead of being vital. Effects on Traffic: The dangerous harm that alcohol and drug abused people cause to the society can bee seen in terms of the traffic accidents caused by these people when they come on roads. Either driving a car or as a pedestrian, they can cause a mayhem to anyone anywhere. They not only pose clear and evident threats to their own lives but to the lives of simple and civilized citizens who have no part in any of their misery or trouble. Violence and Violent Crimes: A person not in his/her senses may commit anything violent as a response to any action that he or she deemed as unfavorable or inappropriate. The reasonability of a person goes down the drain with his senses gone. In depression and anxiety such person always wants others to comply by his/her ambitions. The victims of this violence are usually the weak members of society like children and women. Effects on Job, Income and Workplace: Meeting deadlines and fulfilling commitments is at core of almost all the jobs performed in this world. A person who is afflicted with the alcohol and drug abuse can never be expected to be a responsible, time bound, committed, dedicated and trustworthy person. The damage to the work place reputation costs the loss of earnings and isolation to such a person. Moreover, upon provision of chances the inclusion of such people makes the working environment extremely vulnerable to damages, harms and even life losses. This in turn creates calamity for the people who are not directly related to alcohol or drug abuse but have to face the problems of different level due to the exposure of such people. The initial effect of heavy drinking or drug abuse appears in the form of loss in working productivity which in turn affects the whole work place environment. The long term effects include increase in poverty and worse economic condition. SOLUTIONS OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE: It is of extreme importance that solutions be proposed and implemented so that alcohol and drug abuse may eradicate from the society on the whole. Family’s Role The family of the addicted person plays a very important role in helping an addict get rid of his abusive habit of drug and alcohol drinking. Even though it is emotionally very stressful for the family members of such a person but it is necessary that they completely overcome their angry and stressful emotions in order to enable the addict to get rid of the menace completely. Strong family support and communication plays a major role is giving the patient the confidence that he can overcome the problem that he is facing. Professional Assistance It is essential that professional help be sought to solve the issue of drug and alcohol abuse in a person. Rehabilitation is considered as the KEY SOLUTION to this problem. Though it may be stressful but this the ONLY eventual method that works. CONCLUSION: The person affected with drug and alcohol abuse is a threat to society and to himself in many ways. Such a person cannot be a good and viable human resource for the job market which in turn affects the economy of that person very badly. This person cannot be a good family member due to the unreasonable, uncivilized and inappropriate actions.
