This paper shall now consider communication technologies, more specifically, the internet and how it has managed to create a positive impact on the culture of this currently globalized world.The internet impacts on the growth of globalization in the cultural context in the sense that the world has become much smaller and more connected (Guillen & Suarez, 2005). What used to be an ocean away is now just a simple mouse click away and this easy connectedness has allowed individuals to stay in touch with their loved ones.

The increased use of the internet has also resulted in the “rise in its use by ethnic ideological and national groups anxious to assert their cultural identity” (Yusuf, n.d., p. 4). Cultures which may have been obscure to the international community can now potentially be easily accessible, easily shared, and disseminated to other people through the internet.The impact of the internet on culture has also been noticeable with the easy and rapid spread of popular culture to other people – even those beyond the borders of the country where they originated from.

There is a globalized culture which pervades different nations – from the West all the way to the East (Yusuf, n.d., p. 5). The domination in fields of music, television, film, and mass media no longer belongs to the developed nations, but it is shared with other nations which may equally be capable to enter these fields of entertainment and communication. What is available to the United States or the United Kingdom at any particular time can also be seen in countries like Singapore, Japan, or China – and vice versa (Yusuf, n.d., p. 5). This wider dissemination in distinctly American or distinctly Asian cultures ensures that younger generations are introduced and enlightened about the culture of other nations.

Globalization through the internet seems to imply a uniformization of culture.  However, analysts like Sotshangane, are quick to claim that globalization through the internet makes possible not a separation, instead, an exchange and interaction of different cultures (Sotshangane, 2002).
