Soviet Union, also known as Union of Soviet Republics, was dominated by the Communist party till 1990, making it a highly centralized with planned economy. In their thirst to become the super power, they built economic and military ties with most of the Eastern bloc and other third world counties. Some of highly sought after states by both the super powers USA and Soviet Union included Mexico, India, South Africa and Brazil. Soviet’s relations with the above mentioned states are given below.

Mexico and Russia initiated their diplomatic relationship on 12th December 1890. Moreover, on 4th August 1924, Mexico was acknowledged as the first country of the American continent to form relations with the Soviet Union. Their respective heads of government had visited each other’s countries multiple times which is a sign of strengthening relations between the two. These relations have been fruitful for both the countries. Mexico has purchased a range of military utensils namely BTR-60s Ural-4320 and many more (Middlebrook and Rico).

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Soviet Union were established on 2nd April 1945. Soviet Union developed a relationship with Brazil to support their economy against USA. But Brazil maintained a neutral and distant relationship with Soviet Union during the Cold War. Moreover, their relations were only limited to trade and cooperation agreements which benefited both the parties. Also, during the entire dictatorship period in Brazil, which lasted till 1985, the Soviet bloc and Brazil were engrossed in far-reaching trade and economic cooperation.

Trade volumes reached billions of dollars per year which also encompassed construction of several hydroelectric plants in Brazil. (Llc)Soviet’s relationship with India initiated in 1950s when the super-power was in a hunt to foster close relationships with the third world countries. India was supported by the Soviet Union in disputes with Pakistan and China. The relationship was fortified in the period between 1971 and 1976 by the twenty year Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation of August 1971 (Duncan).

India was the beneficiary from the treaty at the time of the 1971 war with Pakistan because the treaty acted as a means of prevention from China’s interference. These ties were also intensified by the growth in trade between the two nations in various sectors such as industrial development, defense production and purchases.Soviet Union and countries of the Eastern bloc had poor ties with South Africa which was due to Africa tagging itself as an anti-communist state. During the cold war, USA and Soviet Union tried their best to build ties with the Africans.

USA supported highly racist policies while the Soviet Union did not which eventually led to an anti-communist attitude by the Africans. These relations were inherited by Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and have continued to be cherish them as time has passed.BibliographyDuncan, Peter J. S. The Soviet Union and India.
