From watching the video, I could not help but feel deva d about the hate crime that shook the residents of Patchogue, New York. It was sad mainlybecause it took the murder of Marcelo Lucero before the society realized how grave the problem of racism was. It was too late for everyone to know how the idea of violence and racism found its way to influence even younger people. It took one brutal murder and seven criminal convictions before the community was able to grasp the seriousness of the issue.

I can only hope that this event will remain to be catalyst of change not only for the community but also for the entire country. There may be differences in opinion on immigration policy, but there should not any disagreements on how immigrants should be treated with respect and dignity. This message of unity should, first and foremost, mold the young minds to respect diversity and promote tolerance in the society. I think that young people are very susceptible to be influenced by the ideas that promote hate.

Yes, the community might have taken action against the crime – holding vigils, anniversary, and talks – but what they need is to involve younger people in these events. I see the need to constantly monitor what kids learn in school and in their homes. After all, they will be the ones running this country in the future. It is therefore everyone’s responsibility to guide and educate every individual about unity amidst our differences. I can only hope that it would not take another person’s death for people to realize the importance of respect and tolerance.
