One of the key institutions of the African American slave community was the church which played a great role in looking into the affairs and calling for the proper treatment of the slaves. On the other hand, the plantations offered the slaves a sense of unity of purpose from where they could ultimately raise some nerve and voice out their grievances. At the outset of the war, the north had a relative advantage in terms of industrial production like weaponry and transportation facilities like locomotives.

The south, on the other hand, had a lot of agricultural produce and a lot of trained officers in the field. In a way, the history of the American West is seen as the displacement of old communities and creation of new ones courtesy of the acquisitions and expansion that was realized in the much of the period. The United States foreign policy in the 1980s was very aggressive in combating communism and defeating leftist totalitarianism that was realized in several countries of the world. This led to increases in the defense budget in order to realize these objectives of finding the seemingly lost place in the international arena.

When Reagan assumed power in 1980, he sought to greatly ensure that the United States exerted a lot of influence in global affairs as it had done in the previous years. Those who supported Americans participation in the Great War felt that it was certainly in order to support and preserve democracy across the war. On the other hand, several people opposed American participation.
