Topic: Affluenza Introduction I affluenza is a social condition brought about by the desire to be wealthy. In most instances, affluenza is viewed as symptom of a culture that sees financial success as a high achievement. Affluenza brings about many negative implications in the mind of a human being. It brings about depression and emotional distress (Graaf et al. 2005). The high rate of mental disarray is brought about by too much wealth-seeking. Affluenza is attributed to social inequalities. Many societies have social classes in which people tend to divided themselves into on the basis of wealth.

People in low social classes have low esteem and thus envy the lives of those who are living in higher social groups. This makes them acquire the desire to strive and get to the point where their friend or family who live in higher social class belong. This causes them to have a lot of emotional distress and in turn develop affluenza symptoms.Another group of people who are prone to develop affluenza symptoms are those people living in high social classes. Completion is affiliated to affluenza (Graaf et al. 2005). People living in high social classes tend to compete among themselves.

This causes the desire for more wealth in order to outdo each other. This aspect makes people to set targets which are beyond their reach and as a result, they end up being diagnosed with affluenza disease. Conclusion Personally I have had an experience with affluenza disease. It brings about selfish desires and greed. Scientists have discovered that affluenza disease result to loss of weight as well as inefficiency of the immune system due to emotional distress. They view it as a channel to other dangerous diseases.

However, it can be cured through psychiatric approach and self approval.References Graaf, J., Wann D., Naylor T H. (2005). Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic. New York. Berrett-Koehler Publishers.
