Reading Response A concise summary of the main point(s) and methods of the reading. John Maanen in his article discusses the lack of ethics and morals that take place in the police service after conducting his research through participant observation where he underwent police training and even got to go out with the patrol officers all in the aim of conducting research. His participant observation is what unveiled the unethical conduct police engage in when handling criminals and suspects ranging from physically abusing them, not reading or respecting their rights and even falsifying rap sheet reports.2) A brief response to the article.

The officers are taught to serve and protect in their training but they go right ahead and do the opposite using their powers negatively to exercise police abuse and brutality and in the process break the ethical and moral codes of the police service. This reminds me of the happenings in day to day society where the people who hold the power are at liberty to carry out illegal activities without any regards for the people they serve or represent. The prospects of having power make people ignorant and arrogant and hold no regards for ethics or morals at all. 3) A description of any questions about the reading or something you would like discussed in class.

The reading elicits a lot of questions all of which regard the issue of trust towards the people holding power. What I would like discussed in class regarding the issue is in regards to what can be done to curb all these ethical and moral inconsistencies from the people who hold power and authority and from those meant to serve and protect and even have taken oath to that regard if such incidences cannot make us trust them?Work CitedMaanen, John. The moral fix: on the ethics of field work. In Emerson, R.M. (Ed.) Contemporary Field Research: Perspectives and Formulations.
