She understands that for the kids to have any chance to be able to study and succeed they must be removed from the brothel environment, where they are forced to spend their time doing chores, to one of the few boarding schools who will accept them as there is a widespread prejudice against children of sex workers. In order to finance this she arranges exhibitions of the children’s work and sells their photos. One child is sent to an Amsterdam exhibition as a representative of the children in spite of difficulties getting his passport, again because of his red light district address. The film aptly illustrates the bureaucratic as well as financial hurdles, such as getting HIV testing, that the kids must overcome to have any hope of escaping brothel life. It tells the stories of individual children, some of whom escape and succeed but others do not, usually because their parents feel they need their meager earnings in the brothel. This film strongly implies that few if any of the prostitutes work voluntarily in the brothel as one of the children states his sister was “sold” by his parents
While this film states that prostitution is illegal in India, it appears many females are forced into this lifestyle because they have few opportunities for legitimate mainstream work. Also because of generally low wages families feel compelled to “sell” their daughters into human slavery to supplement their meager family income. At the same time there are religious, social and legal norms forbidding prostitution at least outwardly. This means the sex industry operates as an underground economy and vulnerable prostitutes and their children can more readily be abused by their pimps and den mothers, etc. as they are dependent on them for their survival.
