The Dutch were the first to trade in slaves in the US, and used their trading ships to ferry the slaves. The Africans were ferried to America as laborers to the Americana farms. After the first shipment, the number of slaves being shipped to the US increased. The slave era led to the foundation of plantation colonies system (Bland, 2001). Role of tradition in keeping people in slavery Tradition took a part in keeping people to slavery, since nearly all persons are not willing to stray from their tradition always. Tradition refers to the way of life of a faction of populace. The slaves were motivated to work by being promised to get liberty by their masters. This was a trick and tactic used to hoax the slaves to work; since, they were afraid that the slaves would feel the need to have their own freedom and resent work. Tradition is related to the case study ‘There is no such thing as rest’, since the slaves hardly afforded time to rest. According to the traditions the slave possessors were allowed to use all the available methods in order to put slaves to labor. The act of the whites to whip the slaves instilled fear in the Africans making them work. The whites considered the Africans to be lesser humans; as a result, the tradition of slavery amongst individuals was endorsed. Major Factors Contributing To Racial Prejudice and Discrimination against African- American There are several issues contributing to racial chauvinism and bias against the African- Americans. These factors are stereotypes, racism, sexism and propaganda. Stereotypes Stereotype refers to a person belief regarding a group or an issue. The whites were negatively stereotypic towards the Africans, as a result, they highly discriminated the Africans. Propaganda Misinformation refers to the lies of a political figure told to manipulate the mind of the public against a certain individual or group of persons. It played a crucial in contributing to the racial chauvinism and bias against the African-American, since politicians are inventing new strategies to influence the public’s opinion for their own selfish gains. Racial segregation This refers to the separation of African-American from other races. It was legally allowed in the US, and this encouraged the whites to discriminate the African- American populace, since the law fully protected them. The segregation has included the division of facilities and roles within an establishment, and as a result, African-Americans are being singled out along these lines (Bland, 2001). Ways in which prejudice and discrimination form a vicious cycle Discrimination can be described as the act of being looked down upon and treated unfairly due to a number of factors. Therefore, prejudice plus action equals discrimination, which means discrimination is prejudice in action. The ‘vicious cycle’ of ‘prejudice’ and ‘discrimination’ can be created in two ways (Bland, 2001). Firstly, the slavery acts within America was due to prejudice largely perpetrated by racial stereotypes. Prejudice activates stereotypes and stereotypes strengthen prejudice, which leads to a vicious cycle that often lead to dire repercussion for the targets of the discrimination. Secondly, this cycle was encouraged by parents and protectors who commented negative and stereotypical statements in their houses. The children were warned against black individuals and portrayed as violent and vicious. The children then ...Show more
