The film recounts a story of boys and girls of between 12 and 18 years who are subjected to hunger games. The event is televised annually and the participants are required to fight to the death and the last is crowned a victor. The film takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in a country called Panem. In the film, Katniss Everdeem had volunteered to fight on behalf of her young sister in the game. She is joined by her district’s male counterpart Peeta Mellark. After Katniss and Peeta traines under the guidance of a former victor, Haymitch they come back and The Hunger Game starts. The game starts and Peeta and Katniss were about to commit suicide in the last minute when they are both proclaimed victors of 74th hunger game.
Crime in the society is seen as a result of various relationships and characteristics that a given society displays such as development of a society (Parker 1989). In The Hunger Game, the society in Panem is constituted of thirteen districts of which one is superbly rich and the rest twelve are desperately poor. The wealthy district has the power to manipulate the other twelve districts to engage in crime like televised maiming, killing and life destruction. The film is commentary of the inequality and class divide in the society. The characters who take part in the televised game come from poor districts under a wealth capitol. The president and the organizers of the game live in an affluent district and have the game as a way of appeasing their egos. However, since the twelve poor district residents crave for victory and money from the game, they accept to engage in it and endanger their lives.
