Cohabitation pertains to the act of living together as a couple and engaging in a sexual relationship in the absence of a legal marriage. Many people opposing cohabitation claim that the activity goes against the marriage institution as it lacks true or legal commitment. On the other hand, many individuals supporting cohabitation claim that it is important for testing compatibility for it helps the couple to learn more about each other and whether the marriage is going to work out. Different people have varying opinions concerning marriage and cohabitation, thus, this paper will attempt to note the difference between the two concepts.
According to the traditional family norms and religious beliefs, marriage was considered to be a sacred institution. Cohabiting was not allowed in the traditional family norms and religion. For two people to stay together in an intimate relationship, they had to tie the knot first. Therefore, cohabiting is considered a sin by the religious people especially in Christianity and Muslim religions. On the other hand, marriage was accepted and even celebrated, as it indicated the beginning of a new household. Nowadays, cohabiting and marriage are all accepted in the society, as people leave the couples’ to make decisions concerning their lives. However, a significant portion of people continue to view cohabitation as wrongful.
In the modern society, cohabitation has been on the rise because many people assume that it is less complicated. This may be attributed to the high divorce rates in the society. In the olden days, marriage dissolutions and separations were few, meaning that the institution of marriage actually worked. Presently, separations and divorces are quite numerous, which makes some people view marriage in bad faith. People who grow up in failed marriages or experience divorces tend to avoid marriages.
