Conflict theorists view an educational institution as a tool for those in power to bring about the status quo in the society. They argue that the social elite comes up with schools to ensure the education of their children as well as pass their expectations and values to the other people. Those in authority are also in charge of the school systems. They use this opportunity to ensure respect for the social structure. Conflict theorists have argued that the education system ensures that low and middle-class students become subservient workforce, accept and respect the hierarchy, and learn on motivation through external rewards.
The symbolic interaction perspective looks at the society as a result of interactions of individuals within the society. Symbolic interaction refers to the study of how people incorporate symbols in their attempt to create meaning. The symbolic interactionist paradigm between mainstream and deviant cultural behaviors defines a society as a group of individuals who interact based on the different ways that people interpret their symbols within their culture such as written, non-verbal, and spoken language. People’s behaviors with others are as a result of the shared cultural symbols. The symbolic interactionist paradigm describes small-scale systems, small-scale processes, and is interested in the behaviors of individuals.
