Elimination of violence against women has been at the forefront of major conventions across the globe. The year 1993 saw the establishment of a Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which noted that such violence is mainly committed by persons of the opposite gender or family members (Renzetti and Edleson, 2010). A rather interesting assertion, however, is that violence against women can also be perpetrated by the state itself through the deprivation of women’s rights and privileges. Governments and different organizations across the globe work actively to eradicate the problem of violence against women. Through a resolution, the UN designated the date of the 25th November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This illustrates the magnitude of the problem of violence against women. The poster showcases this issue. The woman on the poster has a face covered as an indication of the severity of the entire problem. The World Health Organization asserts that the scourge of violence against women is an international issue that must be addressed at the family, societal, and international levels. Certain historians are of the opinion that the record of violence against women is linked to the history of women being considered property, as well as a rigid gender role that resigns women to subservience to both men and other women. The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women admits that violence against women is the evidence of historical inequality of power relations between women and men, which have resulted in dominance over women, discrimination against them, and the deterrence of women’s emancipation. Violence against women is a critical social mechanism through which women are forced to acquire a subordinate position in comparison to their male counterparts (Steinmetz and Straus, 2003). The essence of the poster highlights the ongoing fight against the type of violence in question and plays a significant role in the overall elimination of violence against women. The poster implies various types of violence against women. These include domestic violence, which refers to violence against women that is perpetrated by persons with whom women have intimate relationships. This form of violence is also referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV). The effects of domestic violence within the scope of total violence against women are understandable – nearly 40-70% of violent murders against women are committed by their boyfriends and husbands (Purdy, French and Teays, 1998). Studies show that violence does not have to be always physical, but can be also psychological or verbal. Rape can be considered a form of both physical and psychological
