Massive inequality is present in many Canadian societies. However, two of the most significant inequalities in the society include class and gender inequalities. Inequality is indeed a condition where differences become a great issue within the society, and they become the source of unfairness and disadvantages for some while being a privilege to others (McMullin 7). Marx argues that class inequality is a product of capitalism in the sense that social class is divided into three distinct categories based on their relations to the mode of production. The three groups include the bourgeois (upper class, the owner of the mode of production), petite bourgeoisie (self-employed), and the proletariat (the working class). Marx assumes that as time passes by, the petit bourgeois and middle class will eventually become extinct (McMullin 19). This is because the big private companies have eliminated more people that are self-employed. Additionally, people who used to own small businesses have not been able to sustain their businesses, because they are unable to compete with the big companies. Consequently, more people have shifted to the working class whereby they sell their time for wages. Besides, Marx maintains that the exploitation of the working class by the capitalist class is the number one reason why the gap between the rich and the poor keeps on increasing. Due to the exploitation, the material welfare of the working class is dependent on the material deprivations of another (McMullin, 21).
