I’ve understood that formal education contributes significantly to society operations. The major functions of schooling in the society are; socialization, cultural innovation, social change, and social integration (Jeff, 2013). Schooling ensures socialization because it passes the core values of the society from a given generation to the next generation. Schools inculcate values concerning justice, work, family, population, and democracy. Political aspect of socialization is also learnt through schooling; children are taught from early grades to sing the national anthem and salute the flag, as symbols of patriotism.
My opinion on cultural innovation is that it entails developing and transmitting appropriate culture. Schools encourage intellectual inquiry and also critical thinking which ensure generation of new ideas by the students. In universities, the lecturers continuously engage in several researches, so as to expand the knowledge of the students and the society at large (Jeff, 2013). Medical researchers conducted at the university levels of education, assist in improving our life expectancy levels. Also, the psychology researches make it possible for use to effectively utilize our longevity.
Apart from generating knowledge, I believe the education system also ensures positive social change. Education process ensures dispelling of negative traditional values and beliefs, for example religious intolerance. Education broadens the perspectives of the society and the youths in particular; enabling them to think rationally and generate or accept new ideas. Positive social change enables the students to accept new innovations, and ways of thinking; for instance using the internet researches to generate appropriate information for academic researches (Jeff, 2013).
