amily Traditions as any action a person repeats deliberately together either as a family or a community that includes among others additional activity lifting it above other actions as well as increased attentiveness. When carried out in the right way, traditions give specific spirit, magic, and texture to the lives of people daily.
All Bantu communities in East Africa have traditions that their male family members must go through traditional methods of tamale. Western culture and the influence of Christianity and Islam religion continues to influence the waning of the traditional practices but my family is one of those few that continue to stick to the traditional practice. Western culture, Islam, and Christianity advocate for tamale that takes place in hospitalin the pretext of pursuing healthy procedures. To us, tamale is more of rite of passage as opposed to a mere operational requirement of male members of the family. We cook food every eve of Christmas on the calendar. Tamale cooking starts in the early hours of twenty-fourth through to Christmas day. One thing I cannot answer for sure is why our ancestors decided to have the ritual every two years and even ones specifically. However, the choice of the months was specifically because of two reasons.
First, schools in the country go to the recess in the month of August after two long gruelling terms. They reopen early in the month of September for the shortest of the terms in the calendar cum academic year.The recess gives children enough time to go through the traditional tamale process before resuming studies in the final term. Secondly,the harvesting season starts in August and runs through to December considering that farmers depend on rain-fed agriculture in our country. Therefore, female doing the cooking in the seclusion will get enough food as they start the healing process.
