Problems in London Docklands began in 1950’s. This was largely because of the poor maintenance of the port. As a result, large ships which offered the locals jobs stopped accessing the port. The result of this was mass unemployment of the locals which led to economic problems to the residents. The back to back terraced housing fell into disrepair led to housing problems; poor transport system maintenance led to the dilapidation of transport infrastructure. In addition, the area lacked leisure facilities. Following the poor state of the area, the government decided to put it on the first Enterprise Zones in 1981: consequently, the land in the area was made free for ten years.
The government’s approach to evaluation of regeneration initiative in London docklands focuses reducing crime by creating employment for the youth. In this approach, a set of objectives is laid down effectively reflecting the particular circumstances and priorities for each area. In the current approach, the objectives form the indicators of performance and are used for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
