The essay "Minority in Women" discusses the differences in African, Chinese, and Chicana experiences of women in the family setting in the United States of America. Propagation of Chinese families got discouraged in the United States. Most of the Chinese people would travel from China to the United States to look for income that they could use to advance their life in their home country. Some of the few Chinese women who were in the United States served the role of prostitutes so that Chinese men would not intermarry with other races as this practice was not allowed. These Chinese prostitutes helped maintain the split-households.
The Chicanas got colonized and had their land taken away. They lived peasant lives and thus families would work on farms to provide labor on different tasks so as to better the family earnings. The Chicanas consider the extended family as a very important element of their life. They adopted good parenting strategies to safeguard their culture and values. Reliance on nuclear family to create policies affects some families positively while others get affected negatively. The privileged in the society are the beneficiaries of policies based on nuclear families while the less privileged receive minimal benefits. In my opinion, the policy on families should consider not only the married but also single parents. Labor demand in different types of industries has been a major structural factor that has led to the demand for immigrants in the United States.
