They formed the black nationality movement (Burlingame). Some leaders such as the Martin Delaney and Paul Cuffe were convinced that never will the black achieve equality in America, and they advocated for migration. Others like Booker T. Washington together with his followers put emphasis on racial solidarity self-sufficient economies and black self-help. Moreover, the black American decided to halt their fight for racial equality and followed Marcus Garvey’s call for war fo the liberation of the African continent.
Of all, the most outstanding of the separatism was the rise of the Black Muslim. This movement was formed in the year 1930 and attracted a large number of people, about one hundred thousand people. The nation of Muslims, in depression, made an effort to come out of the poverty of the black people living in town. They raised the concept of separatism and made it a religious doctrine and proclaimed that the white people were doomed to destruction. The Black Muslim leader called Elijah Muhammad said that if the Americans did not give the Muslims a separate territory, God would destroy them and eradicate them from the face of the earth. He also said that every Black Muslim that will try to integrate will be destroyed together with the whites (Jolly).
The black Muslims performed a lot of activities besides venting anger and frustration. The organization formed a necessary vehicle for the uplift of the black people and the self-help of the black people. The Black Muslim group encouraged the black people to arise and clean up in order to acquire their freedom and independence. They put some restrictions on the eating manners and forbade the taking of drugs such as alcohol and cigarettes and forbade the eating of pork that conformed to the racial stereotypes. They spurred the creation of the black people businesses.
