I helped my professor work on a research project, where she aimed to study women's perception of other females who undergo plastic surgery. She wants her article to get published in a peer-reviewed journal. I helped her with some of the research tasks and I observed the interview process, which encouraged me to publish my sociological studies in the future too. I realized that what she is doing is important to society because she helps people understand social patterns and what these patterns mean for their individual and collective growth. In addition, my long-term goal is to get a PhD in Sociology and become a professor, in order for me to pay it forward, the way my first professor did for me. Like my Sociology professor, I want to help students understand the relevance of sociology in their lives and in society in general, and to instill attitudes and skills that can help them apply sociology to improve the quality of their lives. My volunteer experiences reinforced my desire to complete a sociology degree by enhancing my knowledge about social institutions and their weaknesses, strengths, and opportunities for development. I am involved in the Berkley City College global studies club and civic engagement club. Despite and because of being a mother with two young kids, I endeavor to become an active member of my community. I want to contribute in shaping a community where my children can peacefully live and pursue their goals of self-development. One of our community projects opened my eyes to poverty, which seems ironic for a first world country. The gap between the rich and the poor, as well as the thinning population of the middle class, encouraged me to one day investigate the causes and solutions to these socioeconomic issues. I believe that sociology is an action research field. As it dissects social ills, it helps people unravel their problems and to become more aware of their strengths and limitations. The knowledge that comes from knowing “what is” can change the status quo and help it become better in the long run. As a mother, my experiences with parenthood and womanhood underscore the relevance of sociology to modern women. Sociology analyzes socioeconomic status and its dynamics. I have asked questions that can be worthy of sociological investigation too. Some of them pertain to the continued existence of the glass ceiling for supermothers who want to do it all and be all and traditional gender norms that are perpetuated and/or challenged in violent media. Because of my experiences as mother, I became more open-minded and realized that sociology can facilitate gender equality too through its action research methods and publication of studies that undermine the relevance of traditional gender norms to holistic and humanistic development. Moreover, education has taken a central importance for me as a mother, which affects my pursuit of sociology. My husband and I live at home with his parents, so that we can afford to put me through school and keep my son in private school. Higher education will improve my financial ability to provide for my family, which for me, is a sign of gender equality. The female gender can be empowered through her attainment of higher education, and they can use this education to help their fellow women to attain the ...Show more
