This research paper will investigate into the process of socialization and its connection to the biological development and formation of the individual and will establish the connections between these two concepts. The perception of the phenomenon of socialization is more and more often today realized through its connection with the biological matters, which deserves attention and is a matter of research.
Research purpose: The process of socialization is one of the key concepts of sociological science and a very important component of biological explanations of human activity and, particularly, interaction between the individuals, which reasonably presupposes connections between the two sciences. The research will consider the phenomenon from the aspects of both branches of science and will establish the mentioned connections.
The results of the research will be given according to the following structure: definitions; the phenomenon of socialization; biological component of socialization; stages of cognitive and moral development; the self concept; Erikson’s model of lifelong socialization.
This section will reveal the key concepts of the work mentioned above. Socialization is a process of child’s acquisition of the skills which are necessary for performing functions of a full member of society. This process of learning is the most influential one that can be experienced by a human being. (Billingham, 2007, 336). Development is a process of human growth during the entire lifespan starting from the moment of conception and lasting till the moment of death. The specific feeling is explained as follows: there are people that wish to help others, no matter if the rewarding is not equal to their efforts (Calabrese 2004, p.21). Socialization from infancy to old age/adulthood is dominated by the various roles that men and women play. Socialization is defined as the process of learning to engage in group life by the acquisition of culture.
The socialization process, imbibes the notion of right and wrong, with regard to our actions, and defines individuals by assigning them gender roles. These roles are assigned to us since birth, and throughout our lives, the socialization process, continues to teach us the difference between proper and inappropriate behavior, particularly with regard to gender roles; their surrounding environment; the rules, laws, norms and customs which we are obliged to follow etc., among others (Beal, 1994; Burn, 1996; Tischler, 2010).
This entire process is known as socialization and it becomes the glue that keeps a civilized culture functioning properly. Without duly socialized citizens, an entire society can crumble in a midst of chaos and confusion. By learning the skills needed to be productive members of society and to function according to the set values and beliefs of the majority, individuals can conform and become functioning citizens of any culture.
The process involves verbalization, manipulation and canalization. There is a growing mindset that gender definition is subject to culture and social norms. The media plays a crucial role in the reinforcing and understanding of gender issues. The research aims at investigating the problem of gender socialization among adolescents and the impact influence exerted by the media.
Socialization is crucial in helping create better relations. The way of parenting is a great determinant of how the children grow and develop. It also helps in their perception towards other society members. Socialization refers to a process through which people learn languages, acquire new social techniques, and obtain data.
The study will be conducted by seeking support from the cognitive development perspectives presented by Piaget and Vygotsky, as well as the personality and development theories by Freud and Maslow in order to examine the association between the theme supported by the author and director in their respective works, and the psychological perspectives argued by the psychologist-theorists as well. Both the above-mentioned novelist and film director have attempted to depict the stages of cognitive and physical growth through their respective works, which experience certain transformations during the course of time, and partially endorse the psychological perspectives articulated by different theorists.
