The case of Maria presented during the video represents the tension between cost, access, and quality. This is because Maria lacked insurance for the healthcare services she required which is why she was unable to benefit from those services on time. In contrast to Maria, another patient Priscilla is an example of what changes are brought by getting oneself covered by insurance. Priscilla got the proper healthcare she required on time because she had insurance coverage for that.

The examples of these two women support the fact that a higher survival rate depends on a patient’s financial status and whether he/she is insured or not. These examples inform us that as responsible human beings, we may take care throughout our lives to protect our health, but in the end the quality of healthcare we are expected to receive and our survival rate boil down to the kind of jobs and insurance policies we have. Our jobs decide if we will be able to survive while taking care of our families and also paying fees to doctors. Many patients remain unable to receive quality healthcare because of not being able to afford visits to doctors. Read More
