The poem was written by Edgar Allan Poe and was first published in 1845. Poe was an American writer, literary critic and editor. Poe was born on 19th January 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the second child. His parents were thespians. His father abandoned the family in 1810 and the mother died a year later. The two orphans were taken in and cared for by John and Frances Allan from Richmond Virginia who however never formally sought to adopt them even though the author lived with them to his young adult age. Continuous fighting between John Allan and him over debts that included gambling debts and Poe’s cost of secondary education mars Poe’s childhood. He attended the University of Virginia for one semester but was forced to drop out due to lack of funds.

In 1827, Poe joined the army using an assumed name. It is believed that he honed his trade in poem writing at this stage in his life by first publishing an anonymous collection of poems known as Tamerlane and Other Poems in 1827. Poe and John reached a temporary cordial relationship in 1829 with the passing of Frances Allan. Poe dropped out of West Point and failed as an officer cadet when he decided to pursue a career as a poet. This led to the author and John Allan ultimately parting ways. Poe married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year old cousin, in 1836. He died at the age of 40 and no official cause of death has ever been established even though various suggestions have been put forth such as suicide, drugs and alcohol, suicide and cholera.
