Introduction

This section of the report offers recommendations on the design and construction in such a manner so that there exists suitable provisions in relation to the timely warning of fire accidents, and safe routes for escape of the occupants. The basic idea behind designing the means of escape routes in a dwelling are that there should exist more than one escape routes and where direct escape is not possible, it should be feasible to arrive at a place of relative safety. Rapid and safe evacuation is anther significant issue which at times may clash with the fire fighting activities.
The next concern in this section is the role played by alarms. Smoke alarms or automatic fire detection alarms provide high levels of safety to the occupants from fire accidents. It is suggested that the fire alarm systems should be in accordance with the relevant recommendations of BS 5839-6:2004 to at least a Grade D Category LD3 standard. Also the smoke and heat alarms should be mains-operated and conform to BS 5446-1:2000
