Geek Squad: Case Study There are a number of key environmental factors that contributed to Robert Stephen’s ability to start the Geek Squad. Perhaps the most overarching consideration is the shift to digital technology. The increasing reliance on complex forms of computers, phones, and televisions necessitated that there be a corresponding emergence of consultants to instruct individuals in usage. The changing demographics of technology purchases also greatly contributed to a larger audience purchasing technology products.

The case study seems to imply that particularly in the instance of women this had a profound impact, as they are less apt to investigate the intricacies of the technology and grasp the instructions. Another prominent consideration is that changes in the regulatory and competitive environment created a situation where an organization such as Best Buy would benefit financially through including Geek Squad consultants inside its retail operations. 2. Changes both in the purchasing patterns of all consumers and women made the acquisition of Geek Squad particularly important for Best Buy.

Best Buy’s purchase of Geek Squad was necessitated by the changes in purchasing patterns of men and women. The main logic in these regards was that the change in purchasing patterns improved sales of technology items, but the return rates were exceptionally high. Through purchasing Geek Squad Best Buy was able to offer customers a means of understanding and operating their technology purchases. Ultimately the inclusion of a staff of consultants met this need and greatly reduced returns on items. 3. In terms of the five environmental factors influencing Geek Squad in the future there are a number of notable trends (Hartley).

In terms of social trends it’s clear that the extent that public education begins instructing students in technology, as well as the degree to which society embraces technologically savvy individuals will have a direct impact on the extent that Geek Squad is needed. Another prominent consideration is economic trends; if the economy improves more people that previously didn’t will purchase technology products. Obviously this will increase Geek Squad’s business. In terms of technological factors, the extent that new forms of technology emerge that challenge individuals comprehension will also impact Geek Squad.

While Geek Squad is firmly entrenched at Best Buy, it is possible that competitive forces emerge; for instance, Wal-Mart could potentially start their own consultant service and impact Geek Squad’s business. Finally, in terms of the regulatory environment it’s possible that the government institute regulations that would require distributors or manufacturers to provide free consultancy to ensure customers are efficiently able to use the products. 4. There are a number of promotional activities that could be used to encourage consumers who use independent installers to switch to Geek Squad.

One considers that perhaps the greatest part about the Geek Squad is that it has a mainstream brand identity. While independent retailers may in reality provide stellar service, the consumer has no way of truly determining if they will receive this service. For Geek Squad they could approach advertising and marketing by emphasizing the consistency and reliability of their service. ReferencesHartley, Kerin. Marketing: The Core.
