Importance of Tourism Industry in Australia Though if compared to many other international tourist destinations Australia still tends to lag behind when it comes to accessing the tourist footfall, tourism still plays a viable and important role in assuring the Australian economic growth and facilitating job creation (Australian Bureau of Statistics 1). Thereby, tourist industry in Australia demands much more importance and resource dedication. It contributes immensely to the national wealth and creates thousands of jobs annually. In the financial period 2003-2004, tourist sector contributed nearly 4 percent of the Australian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Australian Bureau of Statistics 1). Australian tourist industry commanded nearly twelve percent of the total Australian exports and employed roughly 5.6 percent of the overall Australian workforce in the same financial period (Australian Bureau of Statistics 1).
