Introduction

These markets are under direct influence of local visitors as well tourists since traders and local authorities respond to general behaviour of such visitors and introduce changes in markets that would satisfy consumers’ demand. Where local residents and individuals operating in these street markets mainly share same cultural and social background, it is important to examine how such markets respond to requirements of tourists. The purpose of this research is to examine possible impacts of tourism on street markets of London. The research methodology selected is qualitative form of study and various secondary sources have been used to support it. The sample selected for this research includes Camden markets, Borough market, Brick Lane market and Portobello market. The findings of the research indicated that tourism and tourists’ spending are directly related to developments taken place and changes being introduced in these markets by the authorities. Where these changes have played a positive role for some of the markets economically, they are also considered as threats to originality and authenticity of these places. Furthermore, nature and location plays an important role in shaping these trends of changes being taking place in London’s street markets.
