I would add that after some deliberation, I chose the advertisement for a Patek Philippe watch to be analyzed and interpreted for the purpose of this exercise.
In media terminology, denotative analysis is called the first level of analysis and usually relates to just a normal description of what is physically shown on a page. It only takes into account objects as they are placed on the page, as well as their size and color etc. the placement on the page is also given importance in a denotative description. Other things such as choice of font, font size, the mixture of different fonts to create a combined or pleasing effect and the choice of colors can also be deliberated upon.
The medium used here is print, and the advertisement concerned appears to be from a magazine. The background of the picture appears very traditional in light brown and grey tinges. Or maybe it appears so because there is absence of other colors, one really cannot tell. The words VERO are written in black capitals in the center foreground with the Patek Philippe Geneve emblem and the slogan ‘Begin your own tradition’ below that. The image consists of two human figures in a room that is an office. One is that of a young boy and the other is that of his father. The young boy is on the edge of the work table facing his father. Both of the people in the picture have an easy going stance and are at ease with one another. The young boy is looking at his father with a look of admiration and love. The father is on the telephone but has a pleased expression on his face. It is clear that he is full of love for his son. The costumes that both father and son are wearing may be classified as smart casual to business-like. Certainly the boy is clad in a full sleeved shirt with cuffs turned out and a waistcoat. He has on a pair of full length trousers. His hair too is styled and combed
