This movement is attributed to protests founded by a German named Martin Luther who was an Augustinian monk. In 1517, he expressed his arguments against the abuse of indulgences that were solely official pardons granted upon repentance of one’s sins. The particular objection raised by the reformist was the parctice of selling indulgences that allowed christians to literary buy their “ticket” into heaven. This practice had become quite popular in the beginning of the 16th century. Martin Luther, the founder of the reformation objected to the basic tenets of the Roman Catholic Church, which entailed the clergy’s exclusive manadate to grant salavation. Martin Luther believed that a person’s salvation was dependent on an individual’s faith and not solely on priestly mediation. In addition, Martin Luther considered the Bible to be the true and ultimate source.

The Bible teaches to be God fearing and emphasizes the need to repent by the sinners. It believes that God had provided the human beings with free will so that his actions lead him towards the God and not to a path that may lead him to sin and purgatory. This was critical issue that Martin Luther, a German Professor of Theology, disagreed with.
Mostly the efforts of the reformers who objected to the doctrines and rituals of the Roman Catholic Church led to the creation of the Protestant churches. In 1520, the Reformation spread in Italy and however collapsed in the beginning of the 17th century.
A closer look into reformation reveals that national identity is something constructed rather than natural. Nationality was created as particular types of social and cultural interactions encouraged people to imagine a national community where previously there had been only unrelated groups or individuals.
