On Venus Noire (Black Venus) - Movie Review Example

Movie Review-‘Venus Noire (Black Venus)’ film Abdellatif Kechiche directed the Black Venus film. This film focuses on the life and death of Sarah Baartman, a South African woman. She survived a life that was inappropriate for even the awful humans. Her profession started in Britain, where Baartman used to act dressed in tight clothes, which displayed her big behind and bosoms to low class British viewers. The presentation irritated the British society. However, the show eventually settled into the habitats of the French aristocratic (Black Venus, 2010).

In this film, people who understand themselves as superior people viewed a woman a sideshow (Black Venus, 2010). Baartman was a South African native, but found celebrity in Europe in the 19th century. Caezar made her perform in shows and named her the Hottentot Venus. He urged the audiences to see her as part animal, and part human. Baartman acted like a coached animal directed by Caezar, and occasionally, she was to act nude before the gatherings. The audiences were authorized to touch her genitals and buttocks as she acted (Black Venus, 2010).

When critics challenged Caezar’s mistreatment towards Baartman, she stated in court that she was performing out of her free will. However, she felt shy to provide an explanation why she accepted to be treated badly. When her partnership with Caezar ended, Baartman found herself working with a showman from France known as Reaux (Black Venus, 2010). He displayed her to the French nobles, and afterwards she worked with Georges Cuvier a scientist, who used her as a specimen for his experiments to confirm that Africans were ethnically inferior (Black Venus, 2010).

The film discovers the poorest capabilities of people and their desires to influence and control others. The film talks several questions of class, race, and opportunity and it does this with authenticity to realism, even when it is painfully atrocious (Black Venus, 2010). A strong scene in the movie occurs in a courtroom, where the jury members, the community, and the perpetrators all sound their conflicting sentiments concerning the life Baartman leaves. The sentiments, though sound rationally from every individual’s opinion, flail in the outstanding structure.

The scene presents captivating insight into the educated western philosophy at that given time (Black Venus, 2010). Black Venus is screened with representations of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and alcoholism although it is emotive abuse and its several outcomes, into depression, powerlessness, and apathy. In this film, the play writer unites two main arguments. It is also a film concerning a historical individual, abused and demoralized during her lifespan and dehumanized and disregarded even past her death (Black Venus, 2010).

The main aim of this movie is to present a face to Barman. Another theme is a discussion on the post-enlightenment modern society, portrayed by its performance towards Baartman in the shadows of chauvinist conduct. The two major themes that join in this film have very diverse sets of difficulties and discursive effects (Black Venus, 2010). Sara Bartman has been presented in this film as an image and representation of several things. First, the sexual, racial, and economic manipulation of African women in an era of extensive colonialism, and imperialism, secondly, Bartman remains as a dominant theme in ongoing discussions about the resurgence of the ethnic heritage destroyed by European colonialist powers.
