The bourgeois grew in economical and social strength as the monarchies got replaced by democratic governments. Art during the time prospered against the political tumult. Gunderson mentions that the early Impressionist, Edouard Manet was a realist but in wanting to break away from the traditions, he along with his group of artists developed unconventional methods of painting that were initially criticized. Later a series of exhibitions in Paris allowed their paintings and methods to get accepted.

According to Katz and Dars, the development of Impressionism and its techniques were spurred as the Salons rejected the unfinished paintings. In their book, the authors mention French landscaping to be dull before the influence by English landscaping. The analysis of the artists and influences allow the formation of an idea of cultural impact on Impressionism.
