Villa di Marlia, Lucca: A Fountain, 1910

Dimensions: 40.4 x 53.1 cm (15 7/8 x 20 7/8 in.)

Medium or Technique: “Translucent watercolor, with touches of opaque watercolor and wax, resist, over graphite on paper” (Sargent 1)

Source: Sargent

The work of art created by John Singer Sargent in 1910 was made using watercolors. It is liked among other artworks because of the manner by which it exemplified and exhibited the talent of the artist through his style and rendition of the foundation, reportedly in Villa di Maria at Lucca. He was able to effectively and vividly create a visual representation of the fountain, complete with the body of water where it flows. Likewise, other images surrounding the fountain were also effectively painted where a mixing of colors was created to capture the real scenery to provide reality to the view. I could even picture white swans swimming beneath the water which flowed from the fountain. These added to a life that seemed to emanate from the dynamic and ongoing flow. Likewise, I can even imagine the ripples from the body of water below as the fountain spurt forth its dynamic energy. It gives me a sense of rejuvenation; yet, also a feeling of serenity.

I initially perceived that working with watercolors was fairly challenging. As such, Sargent evidently proved that his skills in painting were genuine and innate. The mixing of colors enabled him to create the impression that is intended to be relayed to the audience. The overall effect was therefore effective in eliciting different emotions from the viewers, depending on perspectives and how each person appreciated this particular work of art.

I felt exhilarated and inspired when I look at this painting. The magnificent view and lush green landscape in the background were also captured in greater depth and detail. Even the fruit-bearing shrubs added appeal and impact to his work. When I viewed this painting, I would like to be brought to the actual scene; where I am sure it would present a breathtaking view. Thus, by viewing the painting, I am sure the audience is given a glimpse of the beauty of the garden which the painter got the inspiration from. Likewise, the painting also inspires others, especially those reflecting to emulate his profession and become artists in their own respective capacities. By learning how to appreciate works of art that were created by artists through years of practice and through genuine interest in this endeavor, other prospective artists could likewise be inspired to create similar works of art. Thus, the painting became a source of inspiration and a learning experience to look more closely and appreciate the beauty in the creation of artists, who wanted to share the exhilarating experience of seeing the magnificence in nature, through art. Overall, I liked this work of art, not only due to the beauty it exhibits; but more so, because of the wealth of emotions, it was able to elicit in viewers like me.
