On the other side, this artwork’s political significance is interconnected with the artist’s sympathetic attitude towards the peasant/working class people. One can see that rural life deeply influenced the artist and this artwork proves his positive attitude to the same in general. In addition, the artwork is symbolic of humbleness and cohesion that can be seen in rural life. The medium of this artwork (say, painting) is oil and canvas. To be specific, the painter did not try to deviate from the traditional medium in painting.

The painter chose oil and canvas as the medium because oil paints are durable and canvas is less pricey. One can see that this artwork (appendix-1) represents Van Gogh’s improvement as an artist. So, the usage of canvas as a medium helped him to unleash his artistic creativity with less economic burden. Besides, the usage of oil within the context of painting was popular in Europe. On the other side, the artist provided ample importance to the durability of his artwork and this method was suitable for the same.

When one tries to go through the artwork, one can see that some people are eating potatoes and chatting with each other. There is a lantern in the middle of the room and the same is the source of light in the artwork. The simple attire of the human figures in the artwork proves that they belong to peasant class. One can imagine that these peasants are spending their leisure time by eating and sharing their feeling with each other. Besides, this artwork was completed by the artist in the year 1885.

From a different angle of view, the artwork represents the transition of the European society. The gradual progress-indebted to geographical discoveries and renaissance spirit-related to modernization deeply influenced the society. Besides, this transition from agrarianism to industrialization deeply influenced the peasant class. The
