In “The Calling of St. Matthew”, Caravaggio depicted an event that occurred narrative of the moment when Jesus Christ encouraged the tax collector, Matthew, to have faith in him and become his disciple. The painting possesses a clear attribute of reality through the bodily gestures and facial expressions drawn to life with realistic human anatomies along with a concrete setting where men discuss over a table by the window. Caravaggio seemed to have made particular emphasis on the placement of light and shadows to signify the spots where the main subjects are designated. Through the perspective of light, a viewer readily figures the character with authority and Caravaggio’s balancing technique with light and shadow tends to enable the Christ a reflection of his divine nature, illuminating what beams on the faces of men despite the gloom of the place. Altogether, the image projected of Christ and of St. Matthew is something that stirs familiarity to a powerful act of faith. One who had lived in the age of Italian Renaissance, nevertheless, would have seen religious portrayals which were more of picturesque heavens, cherubs, seraphs, and divine figures whose rigid structure(are rather beyond the grasp of real senses. Depictions of Christ’s death on the cross via Italian Renaissance Art often took on a general flat image, lacking proper volume or additional dimension that could have enliven the subject of the painting and added to it some relevant drama. Sometime around 1343, an artist named Lippo Vanni put the finishing touches on an elaborate triptych he was creating at his studio in Italy. He had no way of knowing that bubonic plague was about to sweep through Northern Europe or that the art world was about to be revolutionized by the masters of the Renaissance.
It started in Italy in the 1400s and ended roughly in the 1600s in further reaches of Europe. Meanwhile, Italy had already progressed to the Baroque, in which expression took on a more emotional appeal, focused more on natural depictions and emphasized grandeur.
Renaissance is considered to have primarily originated and flourished in the city of Florence, Italy between the Middle Ages and High Renaissance period during the fifteenth century. However, the Renaissance art witnessed its maturity later, during the 16th century in Northern Europe.
The artistic expression of the late 16th century way to the middle 18th century was termed as Baroque. Since Renaissance was the revival of the classics in art, Baroque art was first thought of as the failure to meet the standards of Renaissance.
