Response to quotes The work of detecting social, cultural, and historical meaning in an image often happens without our being aware of the process and is part of the pleasure of looking at the images.” Upon reading this quote, my memory goes back to some of the most memorable images I had seen. I realized how I had subconsciously classified the images depending on the cultural, social and historical setup with which the image was taken. The quote is true in the context that great pleasure is derived from visualizing an image that the viewer can associate to a particular social, historical or cultural period.

The subconscious classification of an image enables the viewer to relate an image to other historical, social and cultural facts that bring about emotional satisfaction.2. “To wilfully look or not is to exercise choice and compliance and to influence whether and how others look.” This quote reminds of a display of images in a gallery. The duration a person take while looking at a particular photo or an artwork depends on the degree with which the image being observed attracts to the psychology of the person.

If an image is psychologically attractive, an individual will have a greater will to look at an image. Nevertheless, a person may choose to look at an image that is not attractive to his or her psychology on a mere fact that the image attracts several onlookers and an individual could just be part of the looking group to understand the attention the image attracts.3. “It is and additional paradox photography that, although we know that images can be ambiguous and are easily manipulated or altered, particularly with the help of digital technology, much of the power of photography still lies in the shared belief that photographs are objective or truthful records of events.

” Reading this quote draws my attention to the initial periods during the development of the art of photography. During the developmental stages of photo taking, photography crafted a position as the post credible and reliable representation of objective and truthful events. Despite the development of technology, the initial impression developed by photograph, has led to the maintenance of an ideology that it is the truthful record of events. Equally, despite the capability of doctoring a photo work, some of the basic elements of photography are unchanged thus making it have high shared belief as the truthful record of events.
