As he grows attached to Diego, he becomes lenient and also pursues a love interest-Diego’s neighbour. The Seventh Seal movie is a drama based on the medieval crusade times where the main character, Antonious Bloch faces many hurdles in his life. After he comes back from the crusades, he realizes that there is famine and plagues in his homeland and there is a man (Death) on his trail to kill him (SDG, 2005). Block challenges his assassin to a game of chess where the stakes are high. If block loses, he dies and if he is winning all is well with him and his family.

There is a strong message in the film and a moral struggle between doing what is right for oneself and the interests of others. The game of chess decides the outcomes of an individual’s life (Young, 1960. This, in itself, is a morally contentious issue as the stakes are too high to be decided by an individual’s game knowledge. Ashes and Diamonds concern the plight of Maciek, a young polish right-wing army man who is instructed to assassinate the new communist secretary (Bradshaw, 2009). He attempts but fails in his first trial, causing the death of two civilians.

He tries again but he is not convinced he is doing the right thing. He falls in love with a girl at the hotel where the communist frontrunner stays. He eventually manages to kill the leader but also dies from wounds from a gunshot he sustained (Malcolm, 1999). The moral struggle in this film is portrayed in the conscience of the young soldier. He is not convinced that killing the communist secretary is appropriate and according to his principles. However, as an army officer, he is obligated to follow the orders he is given, killing the communist official.

Zhang Yimou’s Red Sorghum is a Chinese film that covers the Chinese cultural revolution during the periods of the 60s and 70s. It entails the story of a young poor girl who is married off by her parents to an old man who had leprosy but also owned a vineyard (Ebert, 1989). When the old man dies, she takes over the vineyard and worked to elevate the status of the vineyard as it was dwindling. Later on, Japanese invaders cause havoc by using forced labour from the vineyard and killing people. The works resist and the girl plays a big part in the resistance.

The moral struggle is whether to pursue the current interests of the individuals while their lives are at risk. There is a need for a revolution but it bears significant consequences as the Japanese are brutal and lives are at stake. Pather Panchali is an Indian film that largely dwells on the life of the Brahmin family. They have many struggles to get through as they are poor. The family is composed of the father, Harihar, his wife and ardent provider Sarbajaya, their mischievous daughter Durga, their young son Apu and their aged aunty Indir Takrun (Crowther, 1958).

The family gets through with few alternatives especially after Harihar disappears and Durga gets sick. The moral struggle is mostly in Sarbajaya who has to provide for her family and maintain the dignity of her family despite Durga’s theft endeavours and Harihar’s disappearance. The family is the most significant in the Indian tradition and Sarbajaya must be seen to protect it though some actions by the family members make it difficult for her to justify in the eyes of the neighbours.
