5.2. The Mona Lisa Curse The Mona Lisa Curse is a documentary created by art critic Robert Hughes who has explored the influence of Mona Lisa’s influence on modern art. Today, art pieces have become sign of luxury for the rich, and this is evident by auction houses getting the opportunity to sell paintings at soaring prices. The rich began to see art purely as investments that can be sold for higher prices in later years. Hughes explained how art became objects of appreciation more as commodity that for their aesthetic value.

The marketing of art also focuses on projecting it as commodity to be sold for profit. Hughes has essentially stated that art has lost its former glory and he has expressed a longing for the past. This kind of perspective was rooted in 1963 when Louvre exhibited Mona Lisa in Paris. For the current generation of visitors to art galleries, Mona Lisa is more akin to celebrity status. Hughes has given the example of New York taxi entrepreneur Robert Scull who built his art collection in the 1960s by buying them directly from the artists.

He then auctioned 50 art works at $ 2,242,900. This is kind of betrayal to the artists’ talents since art is now used more as profit making commodities that taking pride in its ownership. Towards the end of the film, Hughes says, “If art can’t tell us about the world we live in, then in don’t believe there’s much point in having it”. Herein I disagree with his view, since art has always been a reflecting of the contemporary culture. It is kind of rule followed by artists in every era, and is reflected in renowned pieces of modern art.

According to Hughes, art is now controlled by the rich who can pay high price for them rather than the critics. However, giving the power back to the critics is not the solution. The solution lies in viewing art from the perspective of the artists since they have created art and so have the answers to all questions. 5.1.
