An Examination of Pablo Neruda as a character in Il Postino Introduction The movie showcases the development of an unlikely friendship between a globally accessible poet and a mail carrier. The movie is a deceptively simple and compelling story of II Postino. The film setting is an island in Italy off the southern coast. The Chilean poet takes refuge on the island after exile from his country in the early 1950s. The poet, Pablo Neruda, takes refuge together with his wife. The couple is lucky that the nation of Italy allows them to reside on the island by counselling the request by the home country to give them back under extradition grounds. The film presents the creation and growth of a relationship between the poet in exile and a temporary mail carrier who is an indigenous resident on the island. The link between the poet and the mail carrier present a story about a person who discovers oneself through poetry. The poetic perspective was previously alien, and the personal discovery was an induction of the poet. The mail carrier, Mario, becomes the hero of the film as a result of the teaching and resemblance of Pablo Neruda. The release of the movie was in 1994 whereby the movie had an international success in the art film industry recognition. One of the successes was the winning of various global awards. Some of the awards include two BAFTAS that include the awards for the best director award and best alien language flick. Pablo Neruda personality Pablo’s character represents the rich in the social hierarchy but a character that has a longing for a general outlook. The ideology of the character is that the resources should be under the ownership of the community and not the few who have the power and are in control. The nature of being audible about communist ideology and the sending of the exile of Neruda to Italy is only possible to a person who has a wide reputation. The Italian government even lets Neruda confide in the country by turning down the request by Chile to extradite Neruda for constitutional claims. The character also represents social connections that are not financial motivations. The making of an unlikely friendship that is a teacher/student is abnormal between people from different social classes (Sabbadini). The simple character of Mario and the noble character of Neruda compromise on issues of poetry despite the economic differences. Pablo and Mario present the two sides of the world and the alternative aspects of describing them. Moreover, Pablo also introduces a language that describes the two alternative perspectives of the globe. The two perspectives are ideological, political as well as emotional. Pablo’s metaphors in his conversations between Pablo and Mario present emotional messages that tend to be poetic in nature. The letters in turn transform the film into a metaphor. The film is a metaphor courtesy of all the things that are extraordinary in life. The film’s visual and audio representations tend to depict the poetry by Neruda as a form of cure. The primary metaphor of the picture is that Mario, who is the ordinary citizen of the island, becomes the hero at the end of the flick. Neruda tends to transfer his knowledge in an unconscious manner to the star of the script (Ryan). Therefore, he tends to shape the central character of the film. Neruda presents the communist politic side that displays romanticism that is contrary to the capitalist extremist in the Chilean nation. The communist perspective is also a perspective that takes the story towards the killing of the main character who is Mario. The character tends to teach Mario about the communist thinking of political romanticism. Mario dies while reading a poem to the communist population in the nation. Pablo represents the fatherly figure in the movie, especially towards Mario. Mario, the main character, views Neruda as a father figure with a possibility to share life ideas and a personality to identify his inner world. The development of the relationships makes Mario find out more about the character of Neruda. Pablo is a character that is an interlocutor. The character of Neruda also has a voice that is initially tentative but is a ridiculous rehearsal that takes place in front of a mirror. The Character of Neruda also presents the aspect of the discovery of the inner world. The inner world is the character that was alien to Mario in the shaping of the future ideologies and political views. The poet, being a communist, was very different in the idolization of Mario. Mario’s father is an introvert who is humble and has little comprehension of the problems facing Mario’s. The instance is in the absence of Mario’s mother who is dead. Mario thus focuses on being vocal as a community through the imitation of Neruda. The character of Neruda tends to be that of a poet who has a very accurate biographical under his description. The description is like in the entire fictional case. The exiled poet tends to pose as Mario, the mail carrier’s psychoanalyst. The friendship of Neruda and Mario after becoming friends tends to be a representation of the journey by Mario. The route includes the uphill movement by cycling to the villa that poses as the residence of the poet. The visits tend to have regular recesses. Mario meditates on the poems of the Chilean poet during the journey to the poet’s villa. The visits also provide the character of Neruda with the opportunity to impact Mario with the optimism of love, relationships, literature and personal knowledge (MASLIN). The central role play of Neruda in the visits is identification. ` The process of identification in the case of Mario is therapeutic. Mario proclaims that he too would like to become a poet after reading the poems of Neruda. Mario also consults with Neruda on how to become a poet. Conversely, Neruda disapproves Mario by stating that Mario would become fat as him by turning into a poet. The identification of Mario, who is like a patient who is willing to be a poet to Neruda, who is the poet, is common in clinical practice. Neruda character also is significant in the sexual advancement of Mario. Mario sees Neruda as the parental figure that was lacking in his life. Through the poems of Neruda, help Mario in creating a relationship with Beatrice that ends up in a marriage. Neruda also offers blessings to the wedding before leaving the island after the wedding of Mario and Beatrice. Neruda also represents a homosexual feeling courtesy of the countertransference relationship that he had with Mario. He denies the sense at first due to the personal uncertainty of the undertones that have a homosexual drive. In conclusion, the film’s script makes an attempt to interpret the intangible meanings of a poet’s behaviour that is in exile for being a communist. The character of the communist poet influences the life of a common resident who would otherwise have had a modest life before the arrival of the poet. The nature of the poet thus shapes the writing of the movie in that the film becomes a minimal symbolism due to its imagery. The description is due to the lack of any dream sequences or any scenes that include scenes in a mental institution. There are also no exhibitions of psychopathology or violence that would be relevant for the maturation transformation process. The maturation is also a process that exerts a personal rapport that is intense and full of countertransference and transference connotations. The character of Pablo is thus central to the formation and development of the film. The movie, in turn, creates a perspective of writing that is full of action in the absence of ferocity and travesty. Works Cited MASLIN, JANET.
