The paper "Oscar Wilde’s Fashion Ugliness Argument" critically examines whether fashion has some ugliness. Oscar Wilde was arguably right in his observation that the mass market that produces and distributes fashion products is saturated with poor quality products, which are meant to appeal to the end-users within a short period of time as the manufacturers make millions of pounds in profits. Producing fashion items for global consumption generally takes precedent over creativity or individual vision. The skill and creativity in the design of tight undergarments, for example, takes a lesser role as far as creating the commodity is concerned. Serving hundreds of millions of consumers with such unhealthy clothes for “six months” requires quick production of simple fashion materials through cheap processes for selling multiple times over without paying attention at the health risks and or discomfort that it would pose to the wearers. The end-result is an “ugly” fashion item that prevents the wearer from freely engaging in his or her everyday duties. In addition, owing to the priority of contemporary corporate bodies that design and produce fashion items to make profits, it is apparent that short-term gains cannot coexist with quality and the “inner” attraction of fashion items. Profit demands continuous generation of unique designs that are easy to manufacture such as backless blouses for women. Once a fashion design has been accepted, usually by individuals who are under the pressure to generate more revenue.

Over 100 years have passed since the death of this great writer and although he remains a mysterious figure, his life has been studied at great length in order to ascertain what factors influenced his literary works. According to The Literature Network, Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1854(Merriman, 2008).
They show the upper crust of society to be a bunch of lazy, silly, hypocritical fools. However, while they make audiences laugh, they also have serious, underlying messages. These messages mean something in the context of Victorian society. They mean something else in contemporary American society.
Wilde’s plays were largely a critique of the societal norms, which he represented through the actions of his protagonists. Closer analysis of the characters depict that Oscar Wilde has also injected some of his characteristics in the main protagonist. To further elaborate upon this aspect of his characters, the substance of this prose will focus on the protagonists from three of his most major, namely ‘Importance of being Earnest’, ‘An Ideal Husband’ and ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’.

As an editor of the magazine, Wilde determined the nature of the content often printing some of his own works while at times soliciting content from other writers of the time. He therefore interacted with top designers of the time and wrote for the women who consumed the very designed.
Another evidence of women's inferiority in the 18th century portrayed through the manner in which the “lady’s world” magazine was edited before Oscar Wilde came took over the editorship.
