Nick Veasey: - Research Paper Example

Artist - description and background “By revealing the inside, the quintessential element of my art speculates upon what the manufactured and natural world really consist of” - Nick Veasey. The artist I chose is renowned for his work in the field of x-ray photography. Famously known as the x-ray visionary, Nick Veasey has left his mark upon the world with his art and continues to do so each day. Born and raised in Britain, Veasey began his career in Advertising and Design, but soon moved onto x-ray photography. His work is exhibited in several places; The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Museum of Contemporary Art in San Francisco, Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, Bonn Parker Technologies in Cleveland, Deutches Roentgen Museum in Germany, and Nick Veasey X-Ray Mural Airports in USA are some of the numerous names (Dubinsky Fine Arts, 2013). Veasey believes in bringing to the world that which is not easily perceived. The inherent power which every object, human or animal hides is the power under whose spell Veasey lies in. In a video, Nick Veasey told of how his first shot had been of a soda can and the second of the shoes he was wearing the very same day, and how just looking at intricate workings of the sole of the shoe had caught his attention; for life! (Veasey, Exposing the Invisible: Nick Veasey, 2009). Method a) Modality: A normal x-ray cannot achieve the depth that is in Veasey’s work. For that, an object must be x-rayed in parts and put together. Nonetheless, technology is catching up and Veasey is keeping pace with it. Radiation is an integral part of Veasey’s work. He works in a specifically constructed concrete structure with a head unit that helps contain the radiation, while the controls are outside (Veasey, About - Process, 2010). His machines are industrial machines that are normally used in arts restoration, electronics manufacturing and military (Graves, 2008). On his own website, Veasey explains how it is dangerous to work with x-rays because of all the radiation. Since he obviously cannot use models for his work, Veasey uses skeletons of dead persons in rubber suits, to prevent radiation from harming them too much. Medical x-rays are snapped within a second, but Veasey’s work can take up to minutes. But even with donated skeletons a problem arises; Veasey has only a limited time to capture those forms before rigor mortis sets in. His one print is usually a collection of multiple shots, which is why his work carries so much detail. b) Science: what makes the modality a unique choice: As mentioned above, Veasey uses state of the art technology for his art pieces. He integrates art with science to produce some magnificent photos. A normal x-ray machine cannot capture the internal image so deeply. To overcome this obstacle, not only does Veasey make use of industrial x-ray machines, but he also captures multiple images from various angles to achieve the result he wants. He makes use of digital artists to incorporate colours into his pictures or to piece together several images. It is his creative use of both technology and imagination that makes his work so very unique. c) Technique utilized: “I divide large objects into pieces, shoot them with X-rays and then again draw pieces together using Photoshop”, says Nick Veasey (Averyanova, 2011). Never the conventional photographer, the idea of penetrating objects is what drew Veasey towards x-ray; ...Show more
