? Number] Movie Review – Cloud Atlas A brilliant movie, an excellent novel, an intense plot that keeps the audience glued to the screen till the movie ends. The story of the movie Cloud Atlas has been written by such passion that makes a person get mesmerized in it and lost in thoughts thinking that ‘really, lives are linked from one generation to another’. Cloud Atlas is a tale well put together with almost mechanical accuracy in its probe of several themes, many of which were focused upon the harmony of good and evil that existed within mankind. The movie leaves the audience in the middle and then starts of again with a new story from the future. The beauty of these stories is that they are somehow inter-twined within each other. As the name of the novel goes by “Cloud Atlas”, the name depicts the map of dreams or shall we say fate. It reflects how fate of one human being effects that of another person be it present or in future. Cloud Atlas comprises of six diverse stories that rally back and forth through time. Each story is exposed to be a tale which is observed or lead by the main character in the next. As the first story begins, it depicts the scene of the mid eighteenth century from the South Pacific region when an American advocate named Adam Ewing traveled by ship from the island of Chatham Isle and sailed back to San Francisco. Before that he had been to Australia to find the legal receiver of a will, thus naming this trip earned the name the Prophetess. This ship was managed and crewed by one of the meanest and cruelest men anybody could find in that region and the ones who could barely endure his (advocates) existence. A friend in need is a friend indeed, the advocate’s only friend and buddy Dr. Goose, an English man who shared his philosophical faith and concerned approach to all there is and was to life. The doctor on the same hand was there to treat the advocate for a stifling brain bloodsucker, an increasingly deteriorating condition for the advocate. The advocate recorded all of his misery and sufferings in his journal which abruptly ended in the middle of a sentence. Thus, the first story leaves the reader / observer in the middle of the sea thinking of how the trip ended for that poor soul. The second story starts showing the concerns for a young bi-sexual English man known by the name of Robert Frobisher. He ran from one place to another hiding from the debts he had gathered, a bad habit of gambling right after his disinheritance by his fathers will back in 1931. This English man went to Belgium with a plan so that he could crawl his way into a famous music composer's menage, with the help of his offerings and his dexterous musical skills he managed to put a roof above his head and earns some money for his pocket. Vyvyan Ayrs was a syphilitic and egotistical old man who was still belligerent to write music, and hired Frobisher, unknown to the facts of the English man’s secret life. Frobisher detailed his experience in the form of letters which he mailed them regularly to his best friend the back in England, Mr. Rufus Six Smith. As time passed by, everything went better than Frobisher had anticipated for. He became an essential asset for the musician’s musical conformations, Frobisher illegally slept with the old man's wife, stole and altered documents from the old musician’s estate, so that he could sell them for the needed cash urge he had in his past life. In one of these items, Frobisher found, was a copy of Adam ‘The advocate's journal’. Frobisher started to create his own music, a genius who began to arise and the bi-sexual began to write his first symphony, the Cloud Atlas Sextet. The movie then fast forwards to the nineteenth century, 1970 California where a journalist Luisa Rey was found investigating possible dangerous insinuations of a new-fangled nuclear plant being constructed. She meets Rufus Six smith, who was an elderly physicist, and the one whose reports would expose the real truth behind the government’s conspiracy to hide the facts of the failures of the plant and why was it really being built. Those who wanted the report used to disappear and the people building the plant would stop at nothing, including murder, and were destined to destroy every copy of the report made of it. Corporate greediness gave the impression to have the higher hand and that’s where the 3rd segment of the movie Cloud Atlas ends with the journalist’s life in impending peril. In the fourth epilogue we met Mr. Timothy Cavendish present-day here in England, where a small flourishing publishing business suddenly accomplishes huge triumph when one of the movies broadcasted became a huge success. As his feat grew, the Cavendish's life disentangles. His hindrance grew when he come across a culture that no longer had a purpose for life; which was already lost with his own, fraught by the system of government and their stupidity. In a recipe of wrong expectations and miscommunications, he found himself detained against his will, and went around planning a plot to escape. He does devour with him, nevertheless, one of the last copies he had acknowledged, titled ‘Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery’. The movie then takes the audiences towards the 22nd century where most of the earth had been diseased and the remaining citizens had overcrowded into large cities run by conglomerates. The common people were supposed to do their municipal duty and spend the suitable amount of money in their trades every year. Bio-engineering had produced fabricated, human beings more like creatures who were bred as workers, controlled by high dosed drugs, and enslaved to various businesses for a particular purpose. Out of this work force one of these fabricated creatures known as Somni, who worked in a fast food joint, somehow attained consciousness, and began to have feelings and thoughts that exceeded for her to do her job. As she rose higher her awareness increased and starts to get help by revolutionaries who wanted to get Somni free so that she could live a real human life. Steadily she developed the liking for an ancient picaresque from the late 20th century and one of her favorites ‘The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish’. Finally we come across the final story which is set in an un-sociable future of the iron-age in Hawaii. "The fall" that had been occurred as the most of what the remainder of mankind was left; sent back to its primitive state, still trying to scrounge out whatever they can get their hands on from planet; Earth. Zachry is a goat-herder in one of these societies where they worship a goddess named Somni. Their clan lived among a non-violent group, but lived in fear of other violent communities on their island; who would rape, plunder, and dominate other communities. Only a few innovative human groups were left from before the fall, which traveled in ships in attempt to find ways to comprehend their dilemma and reconstruct their societies if they could. A woman comes from one of these ships to stay with Zachry and his family. Zachry learns a midst her belongings the orison of Somni, a video interview captured by the corporate itself. These six stories in the movie Cloud Atlas explored most comparable themes, but each story is presented in a different manner which immensely differentiates its viewpoints. Each of these six characters’s lived in a strange world where cruelty, reliance, and ferocity threatened their well-beings. If endurance or improvement was to be created, it could only be accomplished by the triumph of someone else. It is in this distribution of stories and individual involvements that fix mankind across generations and the times that delivers confidence which experiments against the evils existed around the world. Nothing seemed to be squandered in this movie/ novel. As it discovers so many melodies and philosophies that numerous readings it would be essential to rummage them at all. Such a brilliant movie with well-formed characters and unfathomable thematic structure? I believe the movie comes down to the most basic structures of the plot. Expressing six dissimilar stories with six different characters capitalizing my time, empathy, and apprehension in one character at a time. However, it is not that the distinct stories be deficient in suspense or that I didn't care much about the characters than the surroundings of how the author had created scenarios after scenarios so that he could spot on the eventual survival of the story. Should you watch or read Cloud Atlas? If you have ample amount of time then you would appreciate literary fiction in the novel, otherwise if you want to save all the hassle of reading then I believe you could spare out few hours for this movie. This piece of art will test you, frighten you, aggravate you, and challenge you to think about the imperative questions it nurtures. Work Cited Cloud Atlas. Director: Lana and Andy Wachowski.
