Women have achieved little progress in obtaining leadership positions with high levels of influence in four-year colleges and universities. This is attributed to the problem that women continue to be underrepresented in higher-level positions in higher education. This means that males predominantly occupy many high-level positions, and competent women who also deserve to be in high ranks are not given a chance to hold these positions. In addition to that, competent women are only given low to middle-class administrative positions and not high positions equivalent to presidential ranks.

In the paper of June (2007), it is stated that as of 2006, women only make up one out of every four college presidents (June 2007). This points out the low representation percentage of women in integral leadership positions. This study will seek to answer why there are few women in positions of power. This study posits, “what are the various reasons why few women are in positions of power?” Also, this study will inquire about the different challenges that confront women in their quest for advancement in higher rank positions.

This study puts forward, “what are the different barriers that women see that obstruct them in their advancement for higher rank positions?” In addition, this study seeks to understand the mechanisms involved in the power interplay between women and other administrators that contribute to the slow pace of promotion of women in presidential ranks. This study posits, “what are the various considerations and issues that women see towards other administrators that may contribute to their slow pace of promotion in presidential ranks?

”To address these questions, this study will employ a qualitative ethnographic study to determine the barriers to why women are continuing to have limited progress with ascending into higher-level positions at Georgia HBCUs. Current administrative faculty will have the opportunity to be interviewed and express their participation in answering questions about their ascent into higher-level positions.
